Wet Macular Degeneration
Wet AMD
Wet AMD is responsible for between 10 to 15% of all cases of age related macular degeneration. The condition can develop very quickly because the growth of new blood vessels behind the retina is involved. It also goes by the name of Neovascular AMD.
The causes of AMD have been mentioned previously on this site so I shall dive head first into the treatments of Wet AMD. Medical advances in the way the condition is treated means that in the majority of cases further visual loss can be prevented and in some cases it is possible to restore partial sight.
The treatment foe Wet AMD falls into three catagories:
Photocoagulation…this procedure uses a hot laser beam to seal leaking blood vessels. Unfortunately, it can only be used successfully when the area requiring treatment is not in the centre of the macular, and this occurs in the minority of patients.
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)…this method employs the use of a cold laser to seal the leaking blood vessels. The patient is injected with a drug which in turn locates and coats the abnormal blood vessels via the blood stream. The drug is activated by shining the cold laser beam at the coated blood vessels and subsequently destroys them.
Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF)… this treatment has been successful with halting sight loss and in some cases even restoring it. The drug is injected under the macular and targets a protein responsible for the formation of new blood vessels.
There are many Eye Vitamin type supplements available today, but the product that we are particularly excited about is Warren Ringold MD’s own formula called Preserve Mac Forte. We urge you to take a look for yourself, but watch his video first.
