Eye Health Care - In Your Hands
You Can Make A Difference To The Health Of Your Eyes Using The Correct Supplement
Dr. John Nolan of the Institute of Vision Research
Macular Pigment is a protective filter for the Macular
Macular Pigment Density is a measure of the Nutritional Health of the eye
The Macular is damaged by light exposure and oxidative stress – free radical activity
The Pigment is made up three Carotenoids:
Lutein, Zeaxanthin and Meso-Zeaxanthin
Supplementing with these three antioxidants is recommended by Dr Nolan to increase Macular Pigment Density.

Marigolds are crucial to the production of MACUSHIELD- the supplement recommended by the Institute of Vision Research- to improve the health of the Macular Pigment.
"Research now suggests that Meso-Zeaxanthin may be more important than Lutein in
protecting against macular degeneration. Meso-Zeaxanthin is found only in the
central macula where vision is sharpest and normally comprises
25% of the total macula pigment. Bone and Landrum conducted
autopsy research on donor eyes with AMD and found Meso-Zeaxanthin to be the
most depleted of the three macular carotenoids.
Their findings have revealed the critical importance of Lutein being
converted to Meso-Zeaxanthin in the retina in order to maintain the density of
the macular pigment. It is now thought that some individuals may
lack the converting enzyme.
Exciting research, ongoing at the Macular Pigment Research
Centre, in Waterford, Ireland, the largest research centre in
Europe, shows that since Meso-Zeaxanthin has been introduced into a dietary
supplement, people have re-pigmented by up to 40% in 140 days.
Scientists now believe that people who have a high intake of Lutein and
Zeaxanthin (from either diet or dietary supplements) plus take supplemental
Meso-Zeaxanthin will have a very low incidence of AMD."
Macular Degeneration Treatment programmes can only have a limited degree of success so prevention has to be better than cure.
