Dry Macular Degeneration

Dry AMD

As mentioned previously, the macular is positioned in a central position in the retina at the back of the eye. Its function is to enable us to see small and fine detail and objects directly in front of us. It also plays a pivotal role in reading, writing, and driving to name but a few tasks.

There are two types of aging related degeneration: Dry AMD and Wet AMD. On this page we shall be discussing the dry variety.

Dry AMD

The dry version of the disease occurs more frequently than the wet form of the condition but both generally become apparent in people over the age of 55 with as many as 1 in 5 people over 85 suffering from Dry AMD. As we get older the cells in the retina do not function as efficiently as they once did so their uptake of essential nutrients is reduced along with cell’s ability to eliminate by-products.

The result is a build up of tiny deposits called Drusen under the retina leaving it in an uneven condition. In time this will cause the cells of the retina to die causing sight loss. This is a slow process occurring over many years. It is widely believed that a combination of the aging process and free radical damage are to blame for this reduction in eyesight.

Interestingly, not many people talk of free radical damage as being a causative factor; but the use of antioxidants to help with the condition is proof enough as antioxidants neutralise the damaging effects of free radicals.

Unfortunately, there is no reliable medication for Dry AMD, but a healthy, nutritional diet coupled with non-smoking has been proven to delay the vision loss cycle. Two carotenoid dietary substances, lutein and zeaxanthin, are causing great excitement as they have been found to reduce the development of AMD and impede its progression.

There are many Eye Vitamin type supplements available today, but the product that we are particularly excited about is Warren Ringold MD’s own formula called Preserve Mac Forte. We urge you to take a look for yourself, but watch his video first.
